Skate Lessons

People often ask us about skate lessons for beginners, and we're always keen to help skaters improve their skills.

But honestly, skate lessons aren't always the best fit for everyone.

We get it—every skater is unique. So, here are some basic tips for those just starting out with roller skating...

  1. Balancing on roller skates is key.

  2. Balance is something you learn on your own.

  3. Keep your knees bent.

  4. Hold your hands out in front of you.

  5. Keep your chin up and look ahead.

  6. Always wear skate pads.

  7. Practice.

  8. Practice some more.

  9. Be ready to fall.

  10. Refer back to item 6.

Once you've practiced a bit (the timing varies for everyone), you can start moving around. We suggest waddling like a penguin at first. You'll find your own way to move forward—there's no right or wrong way.

We don't usually recommend skate tutors unless you're interested in a specific type of skating like artistic, derby, speed, or hockey. For recreational skating, it's best to just learn as you go. If you're interested in specialised skating, talk to us—we can guide you.

Another reason we don't push for skate tutors is the cost, which can be up to £20+ per hour. We think there are better ways to spend your money. Plus, many tutors might not have the right training or insurance, so always check their credentials.

If you're feeling really shaky on the rink, it will take some time to get comfortable and coordinate your movements. Take regular breaks. We offer RollerStrollas for hire to help wobbly skaters find their balance and build core strength.

Remember, roller skating is a full-body workout. If you're not as coordinated or need to build strength, it might take you a bit longer to find your balance and coordination.

Ultimately, only you can improve your balance and coordination. A tutor adds extra costs that we think you can avoid, unless you really want to dive into a specialized skate discipline.

There's loads of online tutorials you might want to review and try out.

We recommend bending your knees with your shoulders, knees and feet in line. Lower your centre of graviity (remember to bend your knees). Keep your chin up and always look forward with your hands ready to fall forward.

Be ready to fall over. Always wear skate pads and a helmet
